Nostalgic
satire pervades 'Flicks'
Unless you were a
movie-crazy kid B.T. (Before Telivision), you may
miss some of the finer points of Flicks.
But don't let that deter you from seeing it.
Flicks
is a rough-cut gem of nostalgia and satire. It
looks back with gentle affection and mildly bawdy
humor to the friendly neighborhood movie houses
of the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was an era
when Saturday afternoons were not yet devoted to
sports shows, or even American Bandstand.
Saturday afternoon was
devoted to the movies - every golden minute of
it.
Into 90 minutes,
Flicks compresses two feature films
(including Philip Alien - Space Detective),
a newsreel (News R Us), two animated
cartoons featuring a geriatric cat and mouse,
Chapters 25 and 26 of the serial Lost Heroes
of the Milky Way and some coming
attractions.
